Why You Should Take A Gap Year (Atleast Once In Your Life)

It was back in high school when I first heard about the concept of taking a gap year. At the time, it seemed like something reserved for a select few—the students who didn’t follow the traditional path of going straight to college or university. Instead, they took a year off to figure out what they really wanted to do. Of course, there were also the jokes about “living in their mom’s basement for the next 10 years.” But I never gave it much serious thought.

Fast-forward to last year: I decided to take a gap year for the first time in my life. And let me tell you, it was a game-changer. I quickly realized that gap years aren’t just for college dropouts or people who have no idea what they want to do with their lives. In fact, taking a gap year was one of the most important decisions I’ve ever made. In this blog post, I’m here to tell you why it might just be the right choice for you too—at least once.

What Really Is a Gap Year?

A gap year is a deliberate decision to take a break from your career or studies to focus on other aspects of life. It’s a time when you hit pause on work or school and instead devote your energy to something completely different. It might involve traveling, exploring new skills, pursuing hobbies, or simply resting. No studying. No working. Just living.

I’ll admit, I used to frown upon people who took a gap year. I saw it as an excuse to abandon their goals or rely on others until they “figured things out.” But my perspective has shifted entirely. Now, I see it as a powerful opportunity to pause the grind and truly experience everything else life has to offer.

Not everyone who takes a gap year is lost or confused about their direction in life. Some people take gap years to prevent burnout, explore other career paths, or indulge in creative outlets they’ve long put on the back burner. Whether it’s traveling, learning a new skill, changing careers, or spending time with loved ones, taking a gap year can be incredibly rewarding.

Whatever your reason may be, you might need a gap year sooner than you think. Let’s dive into the benefits of taking a gap year and why it’s worth considering.

1. Gaining New Skills and Experiences

One of the most exciting aspects of taking a gap year is the opportunity to learn new skills and create meaningful experiences. Think about it: in today’s world, most of our time is consumed by work or school. What if you could reclaim all those hours and use them to do something that truly excites you?

In Canada, the standard workweek is 37.5 to 40 hours, not including the time it takes to commute, cook, clean, and run errands. For many of us, that leaves precious little time to enjoy hobbies, spend time with loved ones, or simply relax. Taking a gap year means reclaiming those eight hours a day—and then some.

During my gap year, I read over 30 books—a huge leap from the 2-3 books I managed to read in a typical year. I lost myself in captivating fictional stories, explored thought-provoking non-fiction, and gained new perspectives that I’ve carried with me ever since. This wasn’t just about entertainment; it was about growth, joy, and rediscovering a passion I had neglected for years.

Imagine having the time to finally:

  • Learn how to code or speak a new language.

  • Travel to foreign places and immerse yourself in new cultures.

  • Explore hobbies like painting, cooking, or photography.

  • Strengthen your relationships with friends and family.

Taking a gap year allows you to do all the things you’ve always said you didn’t have time for. It’s an intentional break to focus on experiences that enrich your life in ways your daily grind never could.

2. Exploring Different Career Paths

Another incredible benefit of taking a gap year is the chance to explore different career paths. Let’s face it: not everyone loves their job. In fact, a 2018 Gallup survey revealed that 66% of employees worldwide are either not engaged or actively disengaged at work. That’s a lot of people waking up every morning less than thrilled to start their day.

If you feel stuck or uninspired in your career, a gap year can be the perfect opportunity to reassess your direction. It’s a chance to:

  • Brush up on skills that could help you transition into a new field.

  • Research and explore job opportunities that better align with your passions.

  • Take steps to revamp or start your own business.

That’s exactly what happened to me. After developing a psychosomatic disorder, I decided to focus on my health and take a year-long break. At the same time, I realized I was growing increasingly frustrated with my business. I was afraid to step back because the momentum was already there, but deep down, I knew I needed a reset.

Taking that time off allowed me to evaluate what was working, what wasn’t, and what changes I needed to make. I learned from others, restructured my approach, and emerged with a clearer vision for my business. It was an invaluable opportunity to realign my work with my values and goals.

3. Expanding Your Horizons

Your perspective on life is shaped by your experiences. When you take a gap year to travel, meet new people, or immerse yourself in different cultures, your worldview expands. You gain insights that help you grow as a person and better understand the world around you.

But you don’t have to travel the globe to expand your horizons. Reading books, listening to podcasts, or making friends from different backgrounds can all offer new perspectives. Every time you step out of your comfort zone, you create new neural connections in your brain. These connections make you sharper, more open-minded, and more adaptable.

In today’s interconnected world, understanding diverse perspectives is more important than ever. Taking a gap year gives you the time and space to broaden your horizons in ways that staying in your comfort zone never will.

4. Reflection and Refocus

How often do you take the time to truly reflect on your life? Between work, family, and other responsibilities, it’s easy to keep moving without ever pausing to consider where you’re headed. A gap year offers a rare opportunity to press pause, reflect on your journey so far, and refocus on what matters most.

During my gap year, I revisited a childhood passion for creative writing. I started writing poems and even created an Instagram account to share them. This rediscovery eventually led me to write a book (stay tuned for updates!). If I hadn’t taken that time to reflect, I might never have reconnected with a part of myself that brings me so much joy.

Reflection requires rest. You can’t reflect while constantly on the move. Taking a gap year gives you the mental and physical space to sit with your thoughts, journal, and ask yourself the tough questions:

  • What’s working in my life, and what isn’t?

  • Am I pursuing goals that truly fulfill me, or am I chasing external validation?

  • What changes do I need to make to live a more authentic and fulfilling life?

5. The Cons of Taking a Gap Year

Of course, taking a gap year isn’t without its challenges. It can be expensive, and not everyone has the financial means to take months or even a year off work. Expenses don’t pause just because you do, so it’s essential to plan ahead.

Here are some potential downsides to consider:

  • You’ll need to cover living expenses and possibly travel costs without a steady income.

  • Taking time off may delay your long-term career plans.

  • There’s still some stigma around gap years, and future employers might question the break in your resume.

But here’s the thing: if you use your gap year wisely, it can actually add value to your career and personal life. The key is to plan ahead, budget carefully, and approach your time off with intention. For example, you can create passive income streams to support yourself financially or focus on developing skills that will make you more marketable in the future.

Moral of the Story? Take That Gap Year.

Taking a gap year can be one of the most rewarding decisions you ever make. It’s an opportunity to learn new skills, explore different career paths, expand your horizons, and reflect on your goals. If you have the financial resources and support to make it happen, why not take the leap? At the very least, you’ll gain valuable
